A 42 year old male presents to the emergency department (ED) with a one day history of urinary retention and perianal numbness. He reports back pain for the past six weeks which began suddenly after lifting a heavy weight. The back pain is severe and radiates into both buttocks, legs and calves.
He attended a physiotherapist initially and has been taking ibuprofen and gabapentin which were prescribed by his general practitioner (GP). He reports that the pain is worsening despite physiotherapy and analgesia.
